    Seminar Series

This fall, the National Institute for Computational Science (NICS), a high-performance computing center administered by UTK, will offer a series of tutorials and seminars designed to provide UTK students, faculty and staff with practical information about using its resources, as well as other associated opportunities for participation and collaboration.

All the seminars and tutorials in the series will be given by NICS and RDAV personnel and will be held on Thursdays from 2-4pm, in Claxton 233. A detailed list of session topics can be viewed at http://igmcs.utk.edu/seminars.

Virtual School for Computational Science and Engineering

The Virtual School of Computational Science and Engineering (VSCSE) helps graduate students, post-docs and young professionals from all disciplines and institutions across the country gain the skills they need to use advanced computational resources to advance their research.

The National Computational Science Institute (NCSI) is offering a selection of week-long hands-on workshops for undergraduate faculty from among all fields of study. The workshops are directed at improving understanding of computational thinking, modeling and visualization tools and resources, and applying computational methods to advance education and research. The objective is to work with faculty to incorporate computational science and engineering tools, resources and methods into undergraduate classrooms across the nation to prepare undergraduate students for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Information and registration for this Summer’s workshops can be found by following the “Summer 2010 Workshops” link on the NCSI website – www.computationalscience.org/workshops .

Workshop registration policies can be found at - www.computationalscience.org/about/policy

Note: No travel funds are available, but limited funds are available for support for local housing and meals. Please be sure to indicate your housing need on the workshop reservation form.

    The summer workshop offerings include:

    • Computational Biology for Biology Educators – July 18-24 - North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro, NC

Virtual School of Computational Science and Engineering Summer School 2009: Scaling to Petascale August 7-9, 2009

This Virtual School summer school provided graduate students with knowledge of the challenges, opportunities, techniques, and evolving resources for scaling science and engineering codes onto petascale computing systems.

At the end of the summer school participants understood:

    • The techniques for coding on highly parallel architectures
    • Code optimization and debugging techniques in a highly parallel environment
    • The challenges in developing highly parallel codes including use of numerical libraries, parallel I/O challenges, compiler technologies
    • The evolving computational environment for conducting science

    NICS Education and Training Partners

NICS supports TeraGrid users and works to bring information about TeraGrid resources to the scientific community.

Oak Ridge Associated Universities partners with NICS in funding four student-faculty internships and engaging in other synergistic activities.

The Institute for Computing in Humanities, Arts, and Social Science (I-CHASS) and the National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville have made available two million additional hours of supercomputing time to projects in the humanities, arts, and social sciences.

    Education and Training Resources

The National Science Digital Library is the nation's online library for education and research in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This is a great resource for students and teachers alike. The HPC University (HPCU) is a virtual organization whose primary goal is to provide an on-line environment to share educational and training materials in high performance computing topics. The Computational Science Education Reference Desk (CSERD) is a Pathways portal of the National Science Digital Library, funded by the National Science Foundation. CSERD aims to help students learn about computational science and to help faculty and teachers incorporate computational science into the classroom.
